A major part of the North Sikkim landscape falls under the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve. This is the region where the Himalayas give way to the Tibetan Plateau making a diverse landscape within a small area. The Lachung area is characterised by wide valleys, the most prominent being the Yumthang valley which is reached by passing through the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary. The Sanctuary boasts of at least 30 species of Rhododendrons and is also home to a variety of birds like Tits, Warblers, Sunbirds & Pheasants.
Another road diverges from Chungthang towards the village of Lachen and proceeds further to the Gurudrongmar Lake in the Tibetan Plateau. The landscape dramatically changes beyond Thangu. From here begins the trans-Himalayan Zone. The region is home to a variety of Birds & Mammals typical of the Cold Desert.
Vegetation: The relatively lower altitudes of North Sikkim is covered with Sub-tropical Semi-Evergreen & Broadleaved Hill Forests. With the increase in altitude this gives way to sub-Alpine & Alpine vegetation. The stretch between Lachung and Yumthang has one of the best Rhododendron covers in the area. Beyond Thangu, the treeline ceases and is replaced by Alpine shrubs consisting of Primulas, Poppy etc. The Cold Desert area is devoid of vegetation apart from the Lichen that grows on the rock faces in a variety of colours. During July-August the plateau flourishes with a variety of grasses attracting a broad spectrum of Birds & Mammals.

|After breakfast start for Lachung, lunch en route. Birds to look out for include Blue Whistling Thrush, Wall creeper, Grey-winged Blackbird, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Rufous Sibia etc.|
Morning birding around the village of Lachung will yield species like Black-faced Laughinhthrush,White Collared Blackbird, Dark-breasted Rosefinch, Grey-backed Shrike, Spotted Nutcracker, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie etc. Further towards Yumthang in the Rhodo forest birds like Whistler’s Warber, Hume’s Warbler, Rufous-vented Tit, Coal Tit, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Red-headed Bullfinch etc. are not uncommon. The Yumthang valley is worth looking for breeding Ibisbill & Broad-billed Warblers. Red-billed Choughs are more common here than their Yellow-billed cousins. With luck on your side you may see your first Grandala which sometimes flock in numbers more than 50. Halt at Lachung.
Early morning birding in and around Lachung. After breakfast transfer to Lachen for lunch. After lunch birding outside the village and on the Monastery trail. The Bamboo brakes just at the entrance of the village is a sure shot area for Brown Parrotbills. Lachen is also one of the best sites to see the Speckled Wood Pigeon apart from the other commoners of the Lachung Valley. Flocks of Scarlet Finch have also been observed here during July & August.
Start early morning for Gurudrongmar, breakfast enroute. The habitat between Lachen & Thangu has got a bit disturbed by the ongoing road construction works. Previously Blood Pheasant, Red Crossbill, Snow Pigeon etc. have been observed along this stretch from time to time. Along the road to Gurudrongmar from Thangu lookout for species like Ibisbill, Hume’s Groundpecker, Streaked Rosefinch, Snow Pigeon, Red-billed Chough, Horned Lark etc. The rare White-rumped Snowfinch is best looked for around the Pika burrows. The area around Gurudrongmar is particularly good for White-throated Dipper ( both races), Hume Short-toed Lark, Horned Lark, Brandt’s Mountain Finch, Plain Mountain Finch, the rare Rufous-necked Snowfinch, Robin Accentor etc. This is also good site for the White-winged Redstart. The Mammal life here is also very interesting. Keep your eyes open for species like the Tibetan Wild Ass, Mountain Weasel, Argali, Tibetan Gazelle, Red Fox, Pallas Cat, Himalayan Marmot, Royle’s Pika and Black-lipped Pika. Halt at Lachen.
